MISSION HILL
Michigan - Chippewa County - Hiawatha National Forest - 47N-3W-16
May 1, 1940: "Hershel Tinsley of Brimley has returned to the Mission Hill fire tower which he has occupied for several years." (The Evening News)
July 8, 1948: "The three-year-old daughter of a forest ranger was carried off into the woods and killed by a bear Wednesday in the isolated Marquette National Forest, west of here.
The body of Carol Ann Pomrankey was found a quarter of a mile from her parents' lonely cabin by a posse of farmers and woodsmen.
A trapper organized a group which tracked the animal down and killed it.
Carol Ann was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Pomrankey, whose cabin was located next to the mission hill fire tower, 30 miles northwest of here. Her father is a towerman at the isolated station.
The girl's mother saw the child carried off about 2 Wednesday afternoon. The father was at the forest headquarters 12 miles away.
Carol Ann was playing on the porch of the cabin when the bear lumbered out of the woods and ran for her. The mother screamed and tried to frighten off the animal but it grabbed the child and ran back into the woods.
Mrs. Pomrankey, whose nearest neighbor was three miles away, telephoned for help, a posse of 100 men was hastily organized from the hunters, farmers and fishermen in the area.
They found Carol Ann's body about two and a half hours after she had been carried away.
The animal was described as a small black bear, weighing about 200 pounds." (Evening Independent) (Massillon, Ohio)
