October 31, 2007: The three-story lookout structure was burned by vandals on Halloween night.
August 28, 2012: Groundbreaking was held for the construction of a new stone, concrete and steel structure. The past two structures on this site were constructed of wood. The U.S. Forest Service states that the new tower should be finished by late summer of 2013.
June 9, 2013: An announcement was published that the U.S. Forest Service has awarded a contract for the construction of the replacement lookout structure to Dot Construction of Beaufort, North Carolina. The work will begin in July and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
