March 19, 1943: "A new fire tower was erected in September on the Hungerford hills, 5 miles west of Big Rapids, and manned immediately." (Lake County Star)
July 20, 1961: "The United States Forestry Service of White Cloud reports the breaking and entering of the Hungerford Fire lookout tower, Tuesday, July 8 at 12 noon.
Entrance was believed to have been made by breaking off the padlock holding a trap door in the bottom of the tower cabin. A radiopack set valued at $300 was taken. Investigation will continue by the Michigan State police of the Reed City post." (Osceola County Herald)
