May 15, 1972: "Christopher McInnis, a Hattiesburg youth awaiting return to Parchman state penitentiary on a second drug offense conviction, fell to his death from a forest fire watch tower over the weekend.
Authorities said a passing truck driver spotted the 20-year-old McInnis on the tower near the Maxie community about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The driver said he notified authorities after McInnis plunged to the ground.
Officers said there was another youth on the ground in the area who was later found by a helicopter dispatched to the scene. They said the companion of the victim apparently was 'high' on some type of drug and they were not able question him immediately.
Authorities said a coroner's jury ruling was left open pending a further investigation." (The Delta Democrat-Times)
