November 7, 1924: "During Saturday night and Sunday morning there was a high wind throughout the Adirondack mountain region. When James Coffey of Redford, the fire observer, reached the foot of his tower on top of Lyon Mountain Sunday morning he found a wind of almost hurricane velocity blowing, the tower actually rocking on its foundation.
He started up the ladder steps and hanging on tight he made it to the top, but just as he was entering the tower a terrific blast caught him off his guard for an instant and whirled him about. Before he could regain his balance he was actually blown off the tower and suffered a fall of many feet.
His arm and wrist were sprained and he was bruised and shaken up, but fortunately escaped without serious injury." (Essex County Republican)
