April 10, 1939: "A young couple chose a 40-foot observation tower atop the second highest peak east of the Mississippi river for their 'leap into matrimony.'
In an Easter Sunday ceremony on 6,643-foot Clingman's Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains, Charles Ogle, 20, of Gatlinburg married Miss Mary Agnew, 18, of Baldwyn, Miss.
More than 100 persons climbed a half mile patch from the highway to watch. A two-inch blanket of snow turned back some.
Among those who didn't see the wedding was the bridegroom's father.
He weighs 230 pounds." (Kingsport Times)

October 16, 1958: "The W.C. Norris Construction Co., Waynesville, N.C., was low bidder at $57,000 for an observation tower atop Clingman's Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Park officials said Wednesday the spiralling tower will be in the spruce forest at the highest point on the state line ridge between Tennessee and North Carolina.
Construction probably will begin in early spring." (Kingsport Times)
