TENNESSEE LOOKOUTS
WHITETOP KNOBS
Sullivan County
December 9, 1913: "The government has completed the first lookout tower for fire prevention in the Appalachian Forest reserve, in the White Top area near Bristol. The tower is situated on a high peak and rises to such a height that a person familiar with the country can locate a fire in the mountains in North Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee, by means of a field glass.
Several of these towers will be erected and they will be connected by telephones to be installed at once. The towers are built of huge timbers and anchored twelve feet under ground." (The Tennessean)
