NEW ZION
South Carolina - Clarendon County - South Carolina Forestry Commission
August 4, 1937: "A new 100-foot fire tower is to be erected near New Zion, in the northeast part of Clarendon county. State Forester H. A. Smith of the South Carolina commission of forestry, announced today.
The land for the tower site, comprising ten acres, was donated in fee simple to the state by the firm of D. W. Alderman and Son, pine and hardwood lumbermen of Alcolu. The site was selected and laid out by Assistant State Forester W. C. Hammerle, in charge of fire protection activities for the state.
The tower, a four-room towerman's residence, fencing, a barn and minor structures as well as necessary clearing, grading and soil preparation will be secured through the CCC at no cost to the association or the state. CCC Director R. A. Conrad will direct this construction which will be done by the CCC camp of World War veterans located six miles south of Sumter under the direct supervision of Project Superintendent C. H. Haynesworth.
The tower grounds will be arranged in such a manner as to provide a portion of the towerman's upkeep by means of the subsistence farm developed at the tower site.
The first Clarendon fire protection association covers 22,895 acres of forest land which is under observation from the previously constructed Foreston tower. The construction of this new tower will permit the association to increase the area under protection by 35,000 acres.
A telephone line will be constructed to connect the new tower with the Foreston tower and also with the Black Creek tower in Sumter county." (The Columbia Record)
