BEACH HILL
Luce County - Michigan Department of Conservation
June 8, 1934: "The Beach Hill fire tower, new 100-foot steel structure is now complete and ready for use. Most of the work was done by the use of CCC labor. It is located on the highest point in Luce County and will serve a large territory where the fire hazard is high." (The Escanaba Daily Press)
July 19, 1934: "The new Beach Hill fire tower constructed by C.C.C. labor, is now completed and ready for use. The new tower is 100 feet high constructed of steel, with a cabin on top and inside stairway. Officers report that the visibility is complete, the whole country appearing flattened out as the view from an airplane. The village of Newberry, 12 miles away, is better viewed than from the Newberry tower a mile south of town. Beach Hill is the highest land in Luce county, is beautifully wooded with the trees by which it gets its name, and is now reached by passable roads, also constructed with C.C.C. labor. The road runs past Dead Man's lake and will be in better condition before the summer is over.
The new tower will not have a towerman appointed to serve it until after the state conservation budget has been made and approved. It will be served as needed by men already in the service, detailed for that purpose." (The Escanaba Daily Press)
