VIRGINIA LOOKOUTS
BIG KNOB
Scott County
May 26, 1958: The Division of Forestry plans to construct a truck trail to the Big Knob lookout tower atop Clinch Mountain. Chief Scott County Forest Warden Otis E. Osborne announced last week.
This tower, about half-way between Hiltons and Gate City, is not visible from Route 58 due to its location. It can be seen plainly from the north side of the mountain.
The truck trail will replace a jeep trail that has been traveling for several years, Osborne said. This will facilitate maintenance to the tower and telephone line as well as making it easier for the lookout man to get to the tower, he said.
Osborne said construction is scheduled to start the first of June. Except for hiring one bulldozer for a short time, the work will be done by Division of Forestry personnel.
Arlin Hilton of near Dungannon has served as lookout watchman the last two fire seasons." (Kingsport News)
