DUNEDIN
Pinellas County
June 2, 1940: "First girder in the $1,700 fire control tower which is expected to cut fire losses on unprotected Pinellas County areas from 37 percent down to 3 percent, was bolted in place yesterday afternoon in ceremonies attended by William J. Christie, county commissioner, and W.A. McMullen, county engineer.
The 80-foot tower, which is located three miles east of Dunedin, will be used with a second atop the Pinellas Park water tank and with a Hillsborough county station in Hamner Park, in spotting woods and grass fires.
All three stations will have fire finding apparatus, telephones and ultra-high frequency radios, for inter-tower communication. The Pinellas county fire control unit, under the direction of Forester John Bryan, also will have two specially equipped trucks for fire fighting.
Bryan said the fire control system would be invaluable in conservation work and would tend to cut insurance rates in outlying districts." (St. Petersburg Times)
