July 1928: "Virginia's first 80-foot steel lookout tower has been erected near Shady Grove Church, Spotsylvania County, through cooperation of the Virginia Forest Service and the Spotsylvania Forest Fire Protective Association." (The Forest Worker)
June 24, 1929: "The tower, known as the Spotslvania Fire Tower, was erected in February 1928. The wood work in the tower has been painted this year, and the two acres of ground owned by the State on which the tower is located have been cleared. This area has been subdivided as follows: Along the highway has been left a strip of ground 300 feet long and 100 feet deep, which is to be sowed to lawn grass this fall, and has been set aside for use as a parking, or camping ground for those desiring to visit the tower site. The remaining area measuring 200 feet deep and 300 feet long has been divided into small sub-divisions, on which various species of forest trees have been planted for experimental and demonstration purposes, as well as for the beautification of the ground." (The Free Lance-Star)
November 9, 1929: "B.L. Haney, in charge of the Spotsylvania County Fire Tower, stated today that the tower would be open to the public during each of the remaining Sundays in November and that visitors would be welcome on those days. He added, however, that should it rain on any of the Sundays remaining in November, the tower would be closed on the Sunday rain falls.
The people of this section, Mr. Haney said, are cordially invited to inspect the tower." (The Free Lance-Star)
April 22, 1957: "A radio has also been installed recently in the county fire tower at Chancellor, he said, linking it to the Forest Service frequency at Charlottesville.
He urged the public to report fires by telephoning the tower's new number." (The Free Lance-Star)
