December 8, 1936: "The war department has leased to the South Carolina state forestry commission a site on the Camp Jackson Military reservation in South Carolina for the purpose of erecting and maintaining a forest fire tower unit and connecting telephone line, it was announced today by C. E. McCravy, Richland county forest ranger. Work upon the project, which has already begun, calls for the construction of a 100-foot steel tower, a four room dwelling for the towerman and his family, barn and out buildings and about eight acres of cleared land for cultivation. The total area of the fire tower unit is approximately ten acres of land." (The State)
December 15, 1939: "The fire tower that is being moved from the Camp Jackson area to a point 9 miles from Columbia, just to the right of U.S. route No. 1, will be completed in a week or 10 days." (The Columbia Record)
