OHIO LOOKOUTS
LEAVITTSVILLE
Carroll County
April 18, 1951: "Protection against forest fires in the area east of New Philadelphia where thousands of trees have been planted by the Muskingum Conservancy District will be aided by a new 80-foot fire tower erected on a hill overlooking Leavittsville in Carroll co.
The Leavittsville tower, completed only last week and manned on specific days by Alpha Moreland of RD 1, this city, is one of five erected in eastern Ohio by the Ohio Division of Forestry.
District Forester R.H. Redett of Dover, who maintains as office at 928 E. High ave, said today that other towers were being erected near Feed Spring, south of Dennison; Sewellsville, near Piedmont Lake; Senecaville and Otsego.
'The tower man will be on duty on dry windy days in the spring and in the fall, our most dangerous fire period,' Mr. Redett said today. 'By fall we hope to have all the towers equipped with radios so the tower man can broadcast to alert fire wardens in case he sees a serious fire.'
At the present time the tower man will have to leave the tower to investigate any fires to find out how serious they are and then report to proper authorities.
The Leavittsville tower is made of steel with a wooden cab and leased on land leased by the state." (The Daily Times)
